CV Products & Xceldyne Pack-A-Lunch Campaign

6/7/2010 4:56:13 PM

Thomasville, NC: CV Products and Communities In Schools of Thomasville are forming a partnership to help low-income students on free or reduced lunches eat healthy meals during the weekend.

Extending a program that started at Thomasville Primary School, CV Products and CIS of Thomasville are providing needy students at Liberty Drive Elementary with a carepack full of food to last them through the weekend when school is out. CV Products, a Thomasville-based company that distributes racing parts and accessories, is hoping other companies will join in and help out the nine out of 10 Thomasville City Schools’ students who receive free or reduced lunches.

“That was astonishing to me that 90 percent of the students in the city schools are on free or reduced lunch right here,” Melissa Blackwell, a marketing communications specialist with CV Products, said. “We would like for this to be a focus for a call to action. We’re not asking for contributions. CV Products wants to issue a challenge to other companies in the community to get involved.”

Employees of CV Products and Xceldyne Technologies, a sister company that also is headquartered at 42 high Tech Boulevard, have been bringing in food for the program, as well as donating money through payroll deductions. Every Thursday, volunteers sort out the donated food items and fill up customized backpacks to be handed out Friday afternoon. CV Products designed the backpacks that sport the company and the CIS logo.

“It’s not just the community in this building but we’re part of the community at large,” said Blackwell. “We really want to stay involved and help the Thomasville community. Our biggest call isn’t for recognition, we really want to get other organizations to step up and help the children out.”

A similar program was already in place at TPS, but not Liberty Drive, spurring CIS members to change that fact. CV Products stepped in and ensured the backpack program will run through the end of the summer.

“CV Products heard the call,” CIS of Thomasville Director Judy Younts said. “We need the help of everybody out there to take care of our children because it will come back to us. They’re going to be in our businesses, working for you or stealing from you. We want taxpayers, not tax takers. This all goes toward that.”

Susan Upton, Liberty Drive’s CIS coordinator, said that when students get the call on Friday to come pick up their backpacks, the sound resembles a herd of elephants running down the hall. Davidson County’s unemployment has been above 12 percent for more than a year, and the current economic recession has impacted families throughout Thomasville. Upton said students are issued backpacks on a need basis through teacher referrals, and 21 children currently receive the food every week.

“The kids are so excited about the backpacks,” said Upton. “Other kids ask where they can get one. There’s no name on it so there’s no embarrassment factor. It’s not expensive. If one person were to do it, then maybe it would be expensive. But if one person picks up a box of macaroni, it’s not. For CV Products to do payroll deduction, if even if it’s $1 a week, that’s incredible.”

Younts said all food items are selected based on nutrition, keeping up with TCS’ policy of providing children with a healthy diet. The backpacks are colored red and black, LDE’s school colors.

“If the child isn’t getting the right nutrition, they’re not going to be able to learn,” said Younts. “This hits and focuses on so many things. I can’t say enough about the partnership with CV Products. We’ve come in and they have heard us. Parents have difficult decisions to make when it comes to paying rent or electricity, not to mention buying groceries. When a child comes up in a community that cares, that child will care about the community.”

Larry Dixon and Mike Edwards get Hard-Fought wins in Chicago

6/9/2010 11:31:03 AM

Thomasville, NC: Larry Dixon and Mike Edwards continued their winning ways in Chicago, Matt Hagan ended Robert Hight’s three-race Funny Car winning streak, and rookie sensation LE Tonglet broke through for his first Pro Stock Motorcycle win at the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Miller Welders. The winners emerged following a long and exhausting day at Route 66 Raceway just outside Chicago, which included multiple rain delays.

In much the same way that qualifying was interrupted, Sunday’s final eliminations were put on hold for nearly five hours after the first two rounds were completed in the NHRA Full Throttle classes, and the remaining teams not only had to wait out the storm but also to adjust for radically different track and atmospheric conditions throughout the day.

For the fans who braved the elements, the wait was well worth it as Dixon posted two of the best runs of the year and padded his Top Fuel points lead after driving the Al-Anabi dragster to his fifth win in 10 events this season. After posting a 3.78 in his semifinal win over Doug Kalitta, Dixon returned to stop archrival Tony Schumacher, 3.77 to 3.82.

“Obviously, this is big,” said Dixon. “Anytime you win, it is huge. The last couple of times we ran in the final, he has gotten the best of us. It was a long day, at the same time, not as long as Friday, and it was definitely worth the wait. This track is the gold standard when sun is off of it. It is awesome. And a final round under the lights is so cool. This is what I grew up on. My dad raced a bunch of times at Orange County and Lions at night. Our sport is so cool at night. I wish we raced through the summer on Saturday nights.”

With the victory, Dixon, who also stopped Tim Cullinan and Antron Brown, passed NHRA legend Joe Amato on the all-time win list by claiming his 53rd Top Fuel title and is second only to Schumacher’s 64.

“As for Joe Amato, I’m not worthy; that’s all I can say,” said Dixon. “He has so many wins and so many championships. To pass guys like ‘Snake’ [Don Prudhomme] and [Don] Garlits, these are all people I looked up to as a kid. For a lot of years, Joe Amato was the guy. Like I said, I’m not worthy.”

Hagan stopped Hight’s Funny Car winning streak at 15 rounds in convincing fashion. In his semifinal win against Ashley Force Hood, he posted a new national record of 4.022, which he backed up with a 4.035 in the final that bettered Hight’s 4.069. Hagan also drove his DieHard Dodge to wins over Tony Pedregon and Jeff Arend.

“This was [crew chiefs'] Tommy DeLago and John Medlen’s race,” said Hagan. “In the first race we won in Houston, I had to pedal the car, but not here. This weekend, I had a great race car. We tested some stuff recently, but they put what they know back in the race car this weekend. I told Tommy, ‘That’s the race car I’m used to.’ It’s great to have that confidence and great to set the record and win the race. DieHard is based here in Chicago, and [team owner] Don Schumacher lives here. How much better can it get?

“[The rain] was tough. In one round, they started us up and shut us off. Our guys had to go get fuel, and we had to try to not get out of rhythm. We had to keep our composure when things go wrong. I’m real excited about this year. Hopefully, we’ll be in the winner’s circle a few more times.”

Edwards continued his relentless assault on the Pro Stock class with his sixth win in 10 races. He qualified No. 1 and made three straight 6.60 runs in eliminations, but surprisingly, he did not have lane choice for the final. He and Jason Line ran identical 6.601 elapsed times in the semi's, and Line, in his 46th final, had recorded a faster speed, 208.46 to 207.94. Lane choice did not play a role in the outcome of the contest, however, as Edwards and Line locked horns in one of the best races of the day, regardless of class. After leaving together with nearly perfect reaction times, Edwards crossed the finish line first by four-thousandths, 6.594 to 6.599.

“That’s what Pro Stock is all about,” said Edwards, who trailed off the starting line .007 to .006. “The first thing Jason said to me was, ‘Man, you were late.’ What a great way to finish the day. We weren’t at our best today, but we managed to pull off another win. It just feels great. To think that I’m having a better year than last is just incredible. I can’t believe what is taking place. It is all very humbling to me.”

Edwards' six wins already have surpassed his 2009 total of five. He also extended his points lead over second-place Allen Johnson in the Full Throttle standings.

The evening’s biggest celebration was reserved for 20-year-old Tonglet, who joined his brother, GT, as an NHRA national event champion when he downed Steve Johnson in the Pro Stock Motorcycle final. Tonglet, who has been to the final round at two of the last three NHRA Full Throttle Series events, established himself as a serious threat for the Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award with his defeat of Johnson, 6.93 to 6.96. Tonglet, whose father and crew chief, Gary, is also a former Pro Stock Motorcycle finalist, also topped Wes Wells, David Hope, and Angie Smith.

“My emotions are so high right now,” said Tonglet. “I’ve been waiting for this day all my life. GT won a few times, but to have one of my own is awesome. We’re on a tight budget, and this might get us through New Jersey and maybe even Norwalk.

“I got to the final in St. Louis and cut a good light, and Michael Phillips motored around us. My brother, GT, coached me to stay calm for this final. I cut a .011 light and drove around Steve. To do that was just awesome.”

Frank Manzo backed up his victory in Saturday’s JEGS Allstars with another Top Alcohol Funny Car win Sunday. He remains unbeaten since debuting his Al-Anabi colors this season, winning 17 consecutive rounds to begin the 2010 season. Manzo made one of the quickest runs of his career, 5.45, after Mickey Ferro fouled.

Other Lucas Oil champions were Monroe Guest (Top Alcohol Dragster), James Caro (Comp), Gary Emmons (Super Stock), Peter Biondo (Stock), Don Higgins (Super Comp), Steve Furr (Super Gas), and Wayne Christopher, who won the Super Street title on a bye run after Don Carter was unable to stage his car for his semifinal bye.

Larry Dixon Victorious at Norwalk powered by Xceldyne Valvetrain

    6/28/2010 2:46:49 PM

Thomasville, NC: Greg Anderson scored a huge payday at the 4th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, winning in Pro Stock to back up Saturday’s victory in the K&N Horsepower Challenge. Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car), and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also collected wins at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk.

It has been a tough season for Anderson, who has had to deal with the illness of team owner Ken Black and a house fire off the track and disappointing performance on the quarter-mile. The 2008 Norwalk champ hadn’t been to a final since he scored a runner-up finish at this year's season opener in Pomona, but he chose a great event – one backed by his sponsor at the facility to which it holds naming rights -- to stage one of the great performances of his career.

A day after banking $50,000 for winning his third K&N Horsepower Challenge, Anderson triumphed again Sunday to earn a sweep bonus of $25,000. Anderson, the last to sweep, in 2004, accomplished the double with an easy 6.72 to 6.98 victory over Allen Johnson for his 61st Pro Stock Wally.

“This is beyond a dream weekend,” said Anderson. “I couldn’t have even dreamed anything this big before we came here this week. I just hoped and prayed that we came here with a good performance and functioned properly throughout the weekend and just had a slight chance of sneaking a few round-wins and maybe a lucky victory away, and we ended up sweeping the weekend and taking every doggone nickel they had to give. It’s been a long time since we’ve had weekends like this. I guess I've got to go back three or four years for when we had a car that could do these things.

After winning Saturday, Anderson raced right back to another final, the 90th of his career, with Sunday victories over Johnny Gray, No. 1 qualifier Jeg Coughlin Jr., and, on a holeshot, Summit Racing Equipment teammate Jason Line, 6.72 to 6.71. Anderson also won the bonus race with a final-round holeshot.

After escaping with a narrow .002-second first-round victory against rookie Shane Gray, Johnson and his Mopar Avenger defeated Greg Stanfield and V. Gaines to reach the final, his third of the season and 20th of his Pro Stock career, to assure a first-time 2010 Pro Stock winner.

Points leader Mike Edwards, a surprise first-round loser to Line, still holds a commanding lead, 392 points, over Johnson. Anderson remains in fourth place.

The Top Fuel final featured Dixon, who entered the showdown a perfect 6-0 in title rounds this season, and Brown, who was 0-3, meaning that someone’s streak was going to be broken. In a race decided by just .002-second, Dixon kept his record intact, driving around Brown’s .066 to .091 starting-line advantage, 3.88 to 3.90. The victory is the 55th for Dixon, who owns a 176-point lead.

“Seven for seven, I feel fortunate,” said Dixon. “There have been a lot of tight races. That one there was real tight, two-thou. You could race that one again and get different outcomes. I heard Antron at the start and saw him for a bit, and then he kind of faded. I kept looking for some win light, and it came on in our lane. That was just a great drag race, and it’s nice to be on the right side of a tight drag race.

“Out of this four-race swing, to have three wins out of four, that’s huge. That’s the only way you can stay ahead in the points. Nobody can catch you if you’re winning rounds. We have four more races before the Countdown starts, and we’ll go from there.”

In reaching his seventh final of the season's first 13 events and 99th of his career, Dixon again looked flawless in the Al-Anabi Racing dragster, racing past Troy Buff, Doug Foley, and defending world and event champ Tony Schumacher. In the ninth meeting this season between him and second-place Schumacher, Dixon raced to a 3.91 to 4.11 victory to put the record at 5-4 in his favor.

Brown, runner-up this year in Gainesville, Houston, and Englishtown, reached his 52nd final by wheeling the Matco Tools dragster past Luigi Novelli, Pat Dakin, and Don Schumacher Racing teammate Cory McClenathan.

The Funny Car final was a rematch of the title bout a week earlier at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, and Wilkerson reversed that outcome with a solid 4.19 to 4.27 decision over points leader John Force for his second win of the season.

“It was great to win over John because he’s so good, and he’s coming into his own again,” said Wilkerson. “After one bad year, he’s making us all look like we don’t know what we’re doing again, so we’re happy to have that win over John. Last weekend, we let him off the hook.

“We need to do our deal and keep going down the track run after run after run. There are still four races left [in the regular season], so we have to keep on our game.”

Wilkerson, who drove the Levi, Ray & Shoup Mustang to his 14th win in Gainesville this season, reached his third final of the year and 26th of his career. After opening with a 4.20 defeat of technology teammate Bob Tasca III’s Mustang, Wilkerson ran back-to-back 4.27s to trailer Jeff Arend and Del Worsham.

Fourteen-time NHRA Full Throttle world champ Force continues to enjoy one of his finest seasons in years as he reached the final for the second straight time, the sixth time this season, and the 208th time in his incredible career. En route to the title round, Force’s Castrol GTX Mustang defeated the JFR team cars of his daughter, low qualifier Ashley Force Hood, in round one and reigning NHRA Full Throttle world champ Robert Hight in the semifinals, wins that were sandwiched around a second-round conquest of Paul Lee. The semifinal race with Hight was an odd one as Hight had a 1.2-second reaction time after apparently having difficulty with the Christmas Tree starting system. Despite the loss, Force still leads the points by 73 over Hight. Wilkerson climbed two spots to seventh.

Smith kept reigning NHRA Full Throttle world champ and points leader Hector Arana winless for the season with a tight final-round victory in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Smith was better at both ends of the track to secure a 7.07 to 7.08 victory and to cut into the front-runner’s points margin. The victory is the 12th of Smith’s career and moved him to within 120 points of Arana.

“I’ve got to thank my crew first. They kept my bike tuned up for me today,” said Smith. “We had a consistent bike. It went .04, .04, .04, and it went .07 in the final. It just got cooler, and I think we were probably too lean, but we held on to beat Hector. He’s got a really fast bike this year, but all in all, our Al-Anabi V-Twin motorcycle is pretty hateful out there. We came here to run with the best of the best, and we ran with them this weekend.

“Our goal is to try and be in the top five come Indy, and that just helped our progress to be in the top five. The other thing I’m working on is I’m trying to get my wife in the top 10. She’s gaining. She won a round today, and we’ve got three more races to try and get her in.”

Smith, who won the inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte in late March in his only other final-round appearance this season with the Al-Anabi bike, reached his 23rd final by powering past Craig Treble, two-time 2010 winner Michael Phillips, and David Hope with bracket-like consistency, running 7.044, 7.047, and 7.044.

Arana, who scored his first win at this race two years ago, was looking for career win No. 7 in his 13th final. Arana rode his Lucas Oil Buell past Joe DeSantis with a 7.01, then ran back-to-back 7.03s to defeat Angie Smith and Andrew Hines. Arana scored his semifinal victory over Hines, the defending event champ, on a holeshot; his .013 light handily trumped Hines’ .065-launched 7.02 and gained him a measure of revenge for final-round losses to Hines’ Harley in Houston and Atlanta.

The Lucas Oil winners were Bill Reichert (Top Alcohol Dragster), Frank Manzo (Top Alcohol Funny Car), Al Ackerman (Comp), Mike Walter (Super Stock), Ben Wenzel (Stock), Kyle Cultrera (Super Comp), Dan Northrop (Super Gas), and James Monroe (Top Dragster).

Veteran Pat Musi raced to his first NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series victory. Musi, who outran Troy Coughlin, Ed Hoover, and top qualifier Raymond Commisso in the first three rounds, defeated Brad Personett in the final . It was Musi’s first victory in NHRA competition since 1981, when the New Jersey driver won a Pro Stock Wally in Gainesville. Musi’s Dodge Stratus posted a 5.98, 239.44 to hold off Personett’s hard-charging ’68 Camaro, which trailed with a 5.99, 251.02.

Series points leader Von Smith, winner of three events this season, was upset in the first round by Rickie Smith. Von Smith leads Danny Rowe by 85 points with three races remaining in the 10-event series.

Jack Sullivan Claims Biggest Career Late Model Win At Clarksville

    6/28/2010 4:11:59 PM

    Thomasville, NC
Jack Sullivan powered the #1 AAA Diesel/Bryant Motorsports/GRT/Vic Hill Racing Engine Super Late Model to his biggest career Super Late Model win on Saturday night at Clarksville Speedway in Clarksville, Tennessee as he picked up the $10,000 prize in UMP Summernationals action.

Saturday night was a big night for Jack and Team GRT as Sullivan claimed the $10,000 win for his first ever UMP Summernationals triumph at Clarksville Speedway in the annual Toilet Bowl. After winning his heat race, Sullivan drew the second starting position for the feature event. However, he would not get a good start and would slip to fourth early in the event. As the race wore on his car began to come to him, and by lap 20, he was pressuring Jeep Van Wormer for the lead. Five laps later he would race past Van Wormer to take the lead, and went on to lead the remainder of the event en route to taking the big win over Van Wormer, Ryan Unzicker, Rodney Melvin, and Dennis Erb Jr.

“I can’t thank Dicky Allen with Triple A Diesel, Joe Garrison with GRT Race Cars, Bryant Motorsports, and all of my other great sponsors enough for supporting me. We haven’t had the best of luck over the past couple of months, but things have really been coming together since we have been on the UMP Summernationals tour. I want to win the Summernationals title, but right now we are just focused on winning races every time that we hit the track,” commented Sullivan. Jack is currently third in the latest UMP Summernationals points behind leader, Shannon Babb, and Dennis Erb Jr.

Jack Sullivan would like to thank all of his sponsors including Triple A Diesel, Bryant Motorsports, GRT Race Cars, Central Arkansas Pest Services, Rinehart Trucking, Merrill Bonding Co., Vic Hill Racing Engines, JFR Graphics, Xtreme Suspension Technology, AFCO Radiators, Allstar Performance, ATL Fuel Cells, Brinn Transmissions, BSB Manufacturing, ButlerBuilt Safety Equipment, CV Products, Delph Communications, Frankland Rear Ends, Goodridge Hose & Fittings, GRT Fab, Hoosier Racing Tire, Hypercoils, Joe's Racing Products, K-B Carburetors, Out-Pace Racing Products, Penske Shocks, Performance Bodies, Performance Powder Coating, Peterson Fluid Systems, QuarterMaster, QuickCar, R2C Air Filters, Sweet Mfg., MSRMafia.com, Trick Race Parts, Turbo Start Batteries, Wiles Driveshafts, and Wilwood Engineering.

Solid Firecracker 100 Weekend at Lernerville for Josh Richards

    6/29/2010 3:56:27 PM

Thomasville, NCJosh Richards enjoyed a successful Firecracker 100 weekend at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., sending him into the month of July with his points lead intact as he seeks a second straight World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship.

While the 22-year-old sensation from Shinnston, W.Va., fell short of a coveted victory in Saturday night’s $30,000-to-win Firecracker 100, his steady seventh-place finish in the prestigious event capped a three-day visit to the four-tenths-mile that also saw him score a triumph (Thursday) and second-place finish (Friday) in the pair of 30-lap WoO LMS preliminary A-Mains.

Since the preliminary features offered full WoO LMS points and Saturday’s 100-lapper was a show-up points race (all entrants received 60 points), Richards nearly accumulated the maximum number of points available for the weekend. He departed Lernerville Speedway leading the standings by 30 points over Tim McCreadie, more than doubling the 14-point advantage he carried into the weekend after experiencing some struggles during the ‘Great Northern Tour’ events in Canada that preceded the Firecracker 100.

“We had some up-and-downs in Canada,” said Richards, who followed a fourth-place finish in the Great Northern Tour opener on June 15 at New York’s Can-Am Motorsports Park with frustrating runs of ninth on June 17 at Ontario’s Merrittville Speedway (pitted to change a tire after an incorrect compound choice) and 15th at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway (hampered by a bent nosepiece). “Those were a real disappointment. You know everything’s not going to go smooth all year, but it’s rough on everybody when you have nights like that.

“It feels good that we were able to come back strong at Lernerville. We got a win (Thursday), a second and had a decent run (in the Firecracker), and we got back some of the points we lost in the last few races. Hopefully we got ourselves back on track.”

Richards would have loved to add a Firecracker 100 triumph to his ever-growing resume after running so well in the preliminary A-Mains, but he couldn’t quite get his Mark Richards Racing Enterprises/Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket car into the mix for the big money. He started and finished seventh, running in the top 10 for the entire distance.

“The last two nights the car had good balance and everything,” Richards said after the 100-lapper. “Tonight we put a 30 (Hoosier compound tire) on the right-rear and it threw the whole car off balance. It worked good on 20s, but we put the 30 on and I just couldn’t steer. It got to where it was stuck so hard, it got a push. When you’re going that slow on a slick track you can never be where you’re pushing across the track because it just kills your momentum.

“We were definitely closer than where we have been here before in this race, but we were still just a little off.”

After a whirlwind month of June, Richards will spend several much-needed days away from the track working with his crew on his equipment before heading off on a three-race Independence Day weekend of competition. This year’s winningest driver on the WoO LMS (five wins) has tour events scheduled for Fri., July 2, at Wartburg (Tenn.) Speedway and Sat., July 3, at Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway – both new tracks for him – and he also plans to enter his Ernie Davis-owned No. 25 Rocket ride in a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event on Thurs., July 1, at Beckley (W.Va.) Motor Speedway

Josh Richards’ No. 1 team carries support from Rocket Chassis, Cornett Racing Engines, Seubert Calf Ranches, Ernie D’s Enterprises, ACE Metal Works, Petroff Towing, Tony Stewart Racing, Sunoco Race Fuels, Hoosier Racing Tires, Integra Shocks, Slavic Custom Decals, Valvoline, AEM, AFCO, ATL Fuel Cells, Aurora Bearing Company, Autolite, Banshee Graphics, Barnes Systems, Beyea Performance, Brinn Transmissions, Brodix Cylinder Heads, Braswell Carburetion, Butlerbuilt Seat Systems, CV Products, Dohm Cycles, Dyer’s Top Rods, Fram Filters, Frankland Rearends, Howe Racing, Kwik Change Product, LSI, Mason Racin’, MSD Ignition, Outerwears, Performance Bodies, Performance Friction Brakes, Performance Rod & Custom, Ringers Gloves, Scott Performance Wire, Simpson Race Products, Sweet Manufacturing, Tel Tech, TWM Racing Products, Trick Carbon Fiber Driveshafts, Jones Racing Products, TurboStart Racing Batteries, US Brake, Weld Racing Wheels, Wehr’s Machine, Wilwood and Wrisco Aluminum.

Motor Oil Standards Set To Change in 2011

    7/2/2010 8:56:55 AM

Thomasville, NCAPI approves GF-5, SN to go into effect in 2010. GM Announces dexos 1 global engine oil specification for 2011 model year vehicles.

API SN – ILSAC GF-5 licensed oil will hit the shelves in October of 2010, and this new oil specification places greater emphasis on protecting catalytic converters than previous oil standards. While this is good news for emissions, improved catalytic converter life has proven to be detrimental to flat-tappet camshaft life.

Both the new API SN and GM dexos oil standards will require the use of a new type of “Phosphorus Retention” ZDP. ZDP or Zinc, as it is known, provides protection for engine components by creating a phosphate film. The creation of this phosphate film also results in a reduction of performance in Three Way Catalytic Converters. The new “Phosphorus Retention” ZDP is less reactive, so it is less detrimental to catalytic converter performance. It is unknown how this new “Phosphorus Retention” ZDP will perform in flat-tappet and high performance engines.

Another change associated with API SN/ILSAC GF-5 oils will be greater fuel economy performance. This improvement in fuel economy will be achieved by increased use of polymers called Viscosity Modifiers. These polymers help a “thin” oil act “thicker” under low stress conditions. While the liberal use of polymers helps improve fuel economy in modern passenger car engines, older style push-rod and race engines produce greater shear stresses that can “tear” these polymers. When these polymers are sheared, oil losses viscosity, and that can lead to increased wear.

More than ever before, hot rodders, engine builders, and racers need to be aware that API rated products are “compromised” due to Passenger Car OEM requirements for improved catalytic converter life, fuel economy, and engine cleanliness.

To achieve these goals, oil marketers must reduce the Phosphorus, Sulfur and Zinc levels in their oils, and they must use more polymers and aggressive detergents. While these changes are good for modern low rpm, overhead cam engines, older push rod engines and high RPM race engines need lubricants with higher levels of Phosphorus, Sulfur and Zinc as well as lower levels of polymers and detergents.

Fortunately, Engine Builders, Racers and Hot Rodders have Joe Gibbs Driven oils available to them for Engine Break-In, Racing and Hot Rodding, so you don’t need to worry. Joe Gibbs Driven oils use the “old school” ZDP for outstanding flat-tappet camshaft protection. Joe Gibbs Racing uses the Joe Gibbs Driven oils for break-in and racing our flat-tappet engines, and our engines see over 9,000 RPM, make over 850 hp and have to run more than 600 miles per race weekend. Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oils have protected our engines for the last 10 years, and we’ve won 5 NASCAR championships during that time using these oils.

These oils cost a little more per quart than premium passenger car and diesel oils, but they provide greater value and protection. The small investment in the right oil for your flat-tappet cam will same you big money in the long run.

Brown ready to defend Western Swing crown

    7/8/2010 10:26:58 AM

    Thomasville, NC
: Two weeks ago at Norwalk, Ohio, Antron Brown qualified his Matco Tools dragster in the No. 2 position for the second time this season at 3.795 seconds. It was Brown's fourth 3.7-second elapsed time this year. On race day, he bested Luigi Novell, Pat Dakin and DSR teammate Cory McClenathan to advance to his fifth final round of the season. Brown fell in a close match to two-time Top Fuel champion and current point's leader Larry Dixon 3.880 to 3.907. On this heels of advancing to his 20th career Top Fuel final round, Brown moved to fourth place in the standings.

Last July at Pacific Raceways, Brown qualified his Matco Tools car in the No. 10 position at 3.952 seconds at 305.84 mph. It was the only time during the 2009 season that Brown qualified in the bottom half of the field. On race day, he advanced to his sixth final round of the season and defeated seven-time Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher in a close final round match, 3.983 to 3.990, to earn his third win of the '09 season. Brown went on to become just the fifth Top Fuel driver to sweep the three-race Western Swing. In his two tries at the Seattle race, Brown's average qualifying position is 6.5.

"I'm excited to get back to Seattle," said Brown. "It's an awesome city, especially in July. Our DSR Matco Tools team is excited to hit this Western Swing hard. It's a busy three weeks, but the way our Matco Tools dragster is running, we can make up some ground in the standings. Our car has been running really strong and we want to keep that going and build on our momentum heading into the Countdown (to 1)."

"We're ready to get back to racing," added crew chief Brian Corradi. "Our Matco team is doing a great job and our car is running really well. It's always exciting to back to a track that you've done well at. We'd like to keep running strong and hopefully head into the Countdown (to 1) ranked in the top three."

Brown, who won a category-best six races last season, enters the 14th race on the 2010 NHRA schedule ranked fourth in the Top Fuel standings. He trails two-time champion Larry Dixon by 327 points. Brown has five final-round appearances this season (Gainesville, Charlotte 1, Houston, Englishtown and Norwalk) and four No. 1 qualifiers (Gainesville, Las Vegas 1, Topeka and Bristol). Last year, Brown had 10 finals and seven poles. His average qualifying position in 13 races this year is 4.9.

Brown and the Matco Tool Top Fuel Dragster use Xceldyne Valvetrain power to get them to the finish line. Everyone at CV Products and Xceldyne wish Antron and the Matco team the best of luck next weekend.

Ace PASS Win Makes It Two in a Row for Loden

    7/8/2010 11:02:42 AM

Thomasville, NCAndy Loden’s high, wide, and handsome move to the outside of Jay Fogleman on lap ninety-one of Friday night’s Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Piedmont Pride 150 at Ace Speedway sealed his second career PASS South series super late model victory in less than a week. Point leader Preston Peltier continued his consistent streak with a second place finish followed by Jimmy Weller with a career best third. Two young guns in Devin Jones and Stephen Nasse rounded out the top five.

The Piedmont Pride 150 marked the series’ first trip to the pristine 4/10th mile facility and it showed early and often in the first twenty five laps. The yellow flag was displayed four times in the first fourteen laps including a red flag situation coming out for the night’s first incident on lap four. Several drivers had their race cut short including third place points man Heath Hindman who had the hardest hit of the night when his #91 RTV Chevy Impala pounded the turn one wall mid air.

Once green flag racing got underway, constant side by side battles for the lead between veteran Jay Fogleman and series newcomer Andy Loden ensued. The two would take turns leading all the while opening a significant lead over Preston Peltier through the first ninety-one laps. Meanwhile Justin Wakefield was chopping his way through the field with lap times faster than the leaders. Wakefield would make his way all the way up to battle a fading Jay Fogleman for second when the two tangled, sending a fast Wakefield spinning and out of contention for the win.

Wakefield’s spin bunched the field up, giving all challengers a fair shot at leader Loden but no one came even close to the top spot. Loden and his Monroe Roadways race team earned their second career PASS South series victory just six days apart from their first.

The next PASS South super late model event is set for Saturday August 7th when the series makes its’ return to the Newport Speedway in Newport, TN for The Daniel Boone Classic.

CV Products are a proud Contingency Sponser for the PASS South series. For information on the PASS Series South and CV's Contingency Sponsorship please contact mblackwell@cvproducts.com

Fuller to make 2010 Top Fuel debut in Yas Marina entry in Sonoma

    7/9/2010 2:46:56 PM

Thomasville, NC: Fan favorite "Hot Rod" Fuller will return to NHRA competition behind the wheel of the Xceldyne Valvetrain powered Yas Marina Circuit Top Fuel dragster. The seven-time Top Fuel winner will make his 2010 NHRA debut at the 23rd annual Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 16-18, at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma

Championship crew chief Lee Beard, who served as Fuller's crew chief in 2006, will call the shots on the Yas Marina Circuit car. The Yas Marina Circuit dragster is owned by Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management (ADMM) and based in the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. Fuller and the Yas Marina Circuit team also will compete at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver, the prestigious Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil in Indianapolis, and the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Charlotte. The car will then return to Abu Dhabi for winter events at the Yas Drag Centre at Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, scheduled for Nov. 12-14. The Yas team is sponsored on its United States tour by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and managed by Don Schumacher Racing.

"I am very excited to be back racing in the U.S. this summer," Fuller said. "I moved to Abu Dhabi at the beginning of the year to help spread NHRA Drag Racing to the U.A.E. and to develop local talent. People in both countries share a love of cars, of speed, and of drag racing. Now I get to compete against my old rivals in four major events and at the same time help to promote Abu Dhabi and the U.A.E. as a great tourist destination for Americans."

Fuller, who has earned NHRA wins in Top Fuel, Super Comp, and Super Gas, has seven Top Fuel wins in 18 final rounds. He has carded seven Top Fuel poles. Fuller, 39, finished second in the 2007 NHRA Top Fuel standings, winning three races in six final rounds and earning four No. 1 qualifiers. He won the lucrative $100,000 Top Fuel Shootout at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2007. Fuller also has 13 wins in Super Comp and Super Gas.

Beard last served as a crew chief in 2008 when he tuned Antron Brown to two wins in five final rounds during his rookie Top Fuel campaign. Beard, 56, has tuned 10 drivers to 53 NHRA wins in Top Fuel and Funny Car, including current DSR drivers Cory McClenathan and Brown. He won the 1989 Top Fuel world championship with Gary Ormsby and has tuned four U.S. Nationals winners. His drivers also have earned 60 No. 1 qualifying awards.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to be the crew chief for the Yas Marina Circuit team," Beard said. "We have a very talented crew of technicians, and it's great to be reunited with 'Hot Rod.' The biggest asset I will have is that I am surrounded by a tremendous talent pool of crew chiefs here at DSR, and they'll provide the Yas Marina team with the proper guidance and latest technology."

McClenathan, Wilkerson, Anderson claim somber Seattle wins

    7/12/2010 9:33:15 AM

Thomasville, NCCory McClenathan, Tim Wilkerson, and Greg Anderson collected victories on a somber Sunday at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways outside of Seattle.

Earlier in the day, Top Alcohol Dragster racer Mark Niver, 60, from Phoenix, was involved in a fatal incident when his dragster crashed in the shutdown area during the semifinals. Niver’s most recent NHRA national event victory came at this event two years ago, a season in which he also won the national event in Topeka. Niver was runner-up earlier this year in Topeka in his last final-round appearance.

The Pro winners were all quick to salute Niver in their post-race comments. “I want to make sure everybody realizes that Mark Niver was a great competitor," said McClenathan. "He built every component in his race cars. I raced against Mark 20 years ago in Top Alcohol Dragster. This has to be about the family and what they’re going through and not about us, because this whole circle of people that travels around is our family. He’s a great individual, he always had a smile on his face, and he was a fantastic person.”

Added Wilkerson, “When we were waiting for news about Mark Niver and found out about it, the focus just turned into leaving, to be real truthful. I raced alcohol cars with him for years. He’s a super-great guy. You try to take your mind off of it when you race, but you really can’t. The atmosphere ruins your heart. God bless Mark’s family, and I hope the Lord can take care of them somehow.”

“I’ve known Mark Niver forever, and I’ve watched him race on his own by making his own equipment,” said Anderson. “Obviously he was a great engineer, a great fabricator, and he stayed at it. I was so proud of him when he won his first race because I remember how much he struggled by doing everything himself. When I heard what had happened, my heart just stopped.”

The Top Fuel final featured two drivers who have swept the three-race Western Swing in their career, both Xceldyne Valvetrain powered Antron Brown last season and McClenathan 13 years ago, and this year it was Cory Mac’s turn to kick off the three-race affair with a victory as he defeated Brown, 3.88 to 3.90, to collect his 34th Top Fuel victory and 38th overall, and vault into second place in the standings.

“Before the final, I thought, ‘Antron and I have both won this thing [the Western Swing], and I wanted to be the first to do it two times,’ ” said McClenathan. “It’s a lot to ask for, and you can’t get there unless you win this one, which is what we did. [Crew chief] Todd [Okuhara], Phil [Shuler], and the guys did a great job getting it down the track all day.

“I knew from all these years to put on the darkest shield [helmet visor] that you can at this time of day. I put it down and thought, ‘This is so bright, I can’t believe it.’ That’s Seattle for you. You go up there and try to cut the best light you can."

McClenathan, who also won this event in the Alcohol Dragster class in 1990, reached his 62nd Top Fuel final by trailering Mike Strasburg, David Grubnic, and Shawn Langdon with a pair of mid-3.8-second passes and earned lane choice for the final with a 4.13 after Langdon’s cursed season with the Lucas Oil digger continued with a starting-line blower backfire at the green.

Brown, who won this race last year as the middle leg to his Western Swing sweep, reached the final again, his 21st in the class and sixth this year, by defeating Steve Chrisman, teammate Tony Schumacher, and low qualifier Doug Kalitta. Brown opened with a 3.90 but won his next two rounds with passes of just 4.16 and 4.15.

Wilkerson, runner-up in Bristol and a winner two weeks ago in Norwalk, reached his third straight final for the first time in his career and collected his second victory when he defeated Ron Capps, 4.22 to 4.24 in the final round to score his 16th career win. Wilkerson moved into fifth place with the win.

“We seem like we’ve kind of come into our own in this kind of weather,” said Wilkerson, who has scored more wins since the beginning of the 2008 season (11) than any other driver in the Funny Car division. “I looked stupid on Saturday. I got back to the pits, and my guys had glum faces, saying, ‘I can’t believe we smoked the tires two times in a row. We’re going to get our butts kicked tomorrow.’ I had to tell them we were trying something.

“The cooler race track came back to me and helped us. You make so much power at this place, that it’s hard to pull enough back to make it go without smoking the tires in the middle. I think running an alcohol car for years taught me about these things: you tune it up when you go the Midwest and tune it down when you go to the good air."

Wilkerson wheeled the Levi, Ray & Shoup Mustang past technology partner Bob Tasca III, Cruz Pedregon, and Matt Hagan to reach the 27th final of his Funny Car career.

Capps, who collected the first win of his career at this event in Top Fuel in 1995, also won it in Funny Car in 1998, but had been relegated to runner-up in his next three Seattle finals (2001, ‘06, and ‘08). He reached his third final here in the last five years and the 62nd of his Funny Car career by racing his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge past Paul Lee (with low e.t. of the meet at 4.098), Ashley Force Hood, and teammate Jack Beckman.

Anderson, hot off a sweep of the Norwalk event where he not only won the K&N Horsepower Challenge but also Sunday’s Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, continued to remain red hot by collecting career win No. 62 on a 6.59 to 6.62 count against Johnny Gray.

“The addition of Tommy Utt has obviously worked out great, and his biggest contribution has been to calm us down, to keep us from making moves or changes that were too big,” said Anderson. “We were doing that in the past because we were behind and we were trying too hard to catch up too soon. We had all the ingredients with a great team owner, great team sponsors, and all the resources that we need. We’re just doing a better job of utilizing them. Tommy and Rob Downing are absolutely in sync working together in their roles as co-crew chiefs. They see everything eye to eye. The changes that have been  made were very small, but they were enough to get the car calmed down. And that has me get my confidence back. When you regain your trust in the car, you become a better driver again.

“We haven’t operated this smoothly in about three or four years. We’re looking forward to the rest of the year and certainly for the rest of the Western Swing. I guess I’m the only one left who has a chance to sweep the Swing because everybody else lost today. That would be an awesome accomplishment because each of the race tracks are so different with their conditions, and that’s what makes the Swing such a challenge.”

Anderson defeated Greg Stanfield and Rodger Brogdon in the opening rounds then used a holeshot to defeat favored points leader Mike Edwards in the semifinals by just .007-second, 6.60 to 6.59. Anderson’s weekend moved him up to third in points.

Gray, a semifinalist earlier this year in Atlanta and Englishtown, remains winless in the pro ranks in six finals, three each in Pro Stock and Funny Car. Paradoxically, he was a perfect three-for-three in three alcohol-class final rounds. To reach the final this weekend, Gray defeated Larry Morgan, Ron Krisher, and Kurt Johnson.

Pro All Star Series shows great form at The Firecracker 125

    7/13/2010 4:02:45 PM

Thomasville, NC: Ryan Blaney scored his second Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South series victory of 2010 Friday night in front of an always stellar crowd at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley, South Carolina. The sixteen-year-old driver made a patient s march to the front, taking the green flag from the fifteenth position. Blaney managed his tires and waited until lap 102 to make his move to the lead.

Andy Loden finished second coming up one position short of a series record fourth consecutive PASS super late model sanction win in a row. Kyle Bonsignore finished with a career best of third. PASS South point leader Preston Peltier finished fourth followed by Jody Lavender in fifth.

Thirty-two cars attempted to qualify for the twenty-eight car Firecracker 125 starting field. Chase Elliott set fast time after blowing up the engine in his primary car early in the day’s practice session. Elliott’s Pro Photo Productions fast time award didn’t translate to a good result as Elliott struggled to a fifteenth place finish.

Several drivers took advantage of the plentiful amount of green flag racing including Devin Jones and Randy Porter, who both managed solid top ten finishes after having to race their way in through the fifteen lap last chance race. Texas native, Trey Mitchell, matched his season best finish of sixth thanks to a second place qualifying effort. He was followed by thirteen-year-old rookie, Kyle Benjamin, who had a career best night with his seventh place finish.

PASS South gets back in action August 7th when the series makes their first of two stops at the Newport Speedway in Newport, TN for the Daniel Boone Classic.

The PASS National Championship series travels north for the first time in 2010 when the touring short track stars challenge the high banks of New England’s fastest weekly race track, Thompson International Speedway, on Thursday July 22nd.

    Jason Harris wins Power Jam

    7/14/2010 9:36:48 AM

Thomasville, NC: Twelve months ago at this exact event, Jason Harris' family and friends stood on the starting line of Piedmont Dragway and watched in horror as their driver experienced a high speed top end crash. The surreal scene during last night's Big Dog Shootout was once again emotionally charged, as the same assembled group roared their approval as Harris pulled off the colossal victory - amazingly on the one year anniversary of the crash that could have easily ended his career.

Surrounded by the same supporting cast who stood by him during the difficult times, Jason Harris fought back emotion in the winner's circle as he listed the people who wouldn't let him quit 12 months ago. "I've got people in my life who believed in me more than I believed in myself, because I wanted to quit and quit bad," Harris told Drag Illustrated magazine following his win. Harris' Big Dog victory on July 1 was his third to date, and likely the most important win of his entire heads-up career.

Harris' year-long comeback included a stint behind the wheel of a brand new 1970.5 Camaro before settling into the driver's seat of the former Mike Castellana Pontiac Firebird; a car the team acquired in April. Harris' win last night was anything but a lucky break scenario on his one year crash anniversary, as Harris had to fight and drive his way to the winner's circle with a bottom half qualifying spot and wounded motor.

With the number 7 piston dead in the water, Harris' Firebird was still churning out massive power, sliding into the 16 car field in the number 9 slot with a 4.16 @ 178mph pass. Harris stepped it up big in round one, needing top end muscle to escape a Jamie Chappell hole shot. Chappell's .008 gate and 4.21 e.t. fell short on the big end against Harris' .035 and 4.13 e.t.

Facing two time Big Dog winner Danny "The Quiet Man" Perry in round two, Harris knew he had to be first out of the gate against the massive power of Perry's Z06 Corvette. Harris caught a light, his 4.11 holding off Perry's quicker 4.10 at the 660 stripe. "After beating Perry on a hole shot, I felt like I had won the race already," laughed Harris, as he spoke of the mental mountain that Perry represents to his foes in this league.

In the semi finals, Harris faced Gilmer Hinshaw in a peddlefest to the finish line. With both drivers experiencing problems, Harris was first to break the beams at the finish line with off the pace numbers.

The stage was now set for a repeat of Big Dog's final round from just one month ago, as Harris took on Taylorsville, NC's Darrin Hoyle. Staged and ready, both drivers were quick out of the gate, with door handles practically connected the entire length of the track. Harris' .017 and 4.11 e.t. was enough to hold back the charge of Hoyles' .011 and 4.12 e.t. Top speed of the meet was recorded on this run by Harris when he posted a 180.43 mph lap.

As the parachutes drifted out of sight, the grievous emotions of last year's horror were replaced with euphoric victory for Harris' wife, parents and crew as they stood on the starting line. "Last year we were wrecked and in the hospital tonight," recalled Jason's father and team owner Bob Harris.

In addition to the much deserved credit of engine ace Billy Albert, Bob Harris heaped a ton of credit on the team's newest consultant, Robert Hayes, for his talented chassis tuning abilities. "Robert is a big reason why we're running so good and not laying somewhere in the gutter right now," said Harris.

Team driver, Jason Harris, is a talented sportsman racer within the IHRA ranks and is now competing in this his third season of Big Dog. His IHRA sportsman victories are comprised of divisional championships as well as national event wins that include Rockingham and Norwalk. The most cherished, however, are the coveted Big Dog trophies. "The fans and atmosphere of Big Dog is what makes it so great," says Harris, who also praised the corporate entities of Hoosier Tire, Moroso and CV Products for their support of facilities such as Piedmont Dragway and the legendary Big Dog series.

In Renegade action, Tim Lawrence was once again victorious at Piedmont. After qualifying 9th, Lawrence stopped Mark King, Stacy Hall, Mike Westmorland and Charles Richards while taking the hole-shot win in the finals. Big Dog action resumes on August 5, 2010.

Capps gets on the scoreboard; Dixon, Phillips win again

    7/20/2010 11:13:24 AM

Thomasville, NCRon Capps scored his first victory of the season in Funny Car and was joined in the winner’s circle at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma by Larry Dixon (Top Fuel) and Michael Phillips (Pro Stock Motorcycle) at race two of the annual Western Swing.

Seattle winners Cory McClenathan in Top Fuel and Greg Anderson in Pro Stock had their bids cut short for what would have been the middle leg of an unprecedented second sweep of the Western Swing. McClenathan reached the semifinals of his sponsor’s event, and Anderson was knocked out a round earlier. Seattle Funny Car champ Tim Wilkerson, who won two of the three Swing races last year, was defeated in round one. The teams head now to Denver for the Swing’s conclusion at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, the second-to-last event before the Countdown to 1 playoffs begin Labor Day weekend in Indianapolis, but a number of drivers clinched their playoff berths in Sonoma.

The Top Fuel final featured Xceldyne Valvetrain powered duo Dixon and archrival Tony Schumacher, two guys who not only have dominated the winner’s circle this season, but in the last decade as well. Dixon remained perfect in final rounds this season, collecting his eighth win of 2010 and expanding  his points lead to 211 over Schumacher with a 3.87 to 4.00 victory. The win is the 56th of Dixon’s career; only Schumacher, with 64 victories, owns more Top Fuel Wallys.

"The car was flawless," said Dixon. "It was just an unbelievable job by Alan Johnson and Jason McCulloch and everybody on the Al-Anabi team. You’re seeing the numbers up there, and being around the sport and the cars for a long period of time and seeing those numbers, that was, to me, a little humbling. They were on their game. They weren’t leaving anything in their back pocket, that’s for sure.

"You just know when you’re racing Tony — he’s obviously won a lot of races and the last six championships — he’s going to keep you honest. That team doesn’t stumble very often, so you’ve got to go up there and fire your best shot and hope it’s enough. I’m cool with it. I enjoy racing him because when you win, you know you earned it. There’s no backing into it or blower belt coming off or anything. You know he’s going to make you earn it, so when you do win, it makes it that much more gratifying."

Dixon, a Sonoma winner in 2003, reached his milestone 100th Top Fuel final by racing the Al-Anabi dragster from the No. 1 qualifying position with a pair of 3.84s that sandwiched a 3.87. He defeated Steve Chrisman and Steve Torrence in the first two rounds, then ended McClenathan’s bid for a Western Swing sweep in the semifinals.

Schumacher, who won this event back to back in 2007 and 2008, raced the U.S. Army dragster past Morgan Lucas, Terry McMillen, and Brandon Bernstein with passes of 3.88, 3.94, and 3.91 to reach his 101st Top Fuel final.

Don Schumacher Racing teammates Capps and Jack Beckman squared off in the Funny Car final, each looking for his first win at this event after both had clinched their spots in the Countdown to 1 earlier in the day. Capps scored his first win of the season and the 31st of his career, 4.16 to 4.19. He jumped from seventh to fifth place with his day’s actions.

"I feel like I can conquer the world in the car right now," said Capps. "It’s all confidence, and confidence is built on success. We’ve been testing a lot of things all season long. Obviously, when John [Medlen] went over to Matt Hagan’s car, we saw what happened over there. Matt won two races and set the national record. I’ve always wanted to work with John, and it has been such a pleasure with the confidence that I’ve been given in the car. I now go up there without really being afraid of the Tree and really worrying about the car.

"It’s great for Don [having an all-DSR final and three of the four semifinalists]. One thing I’ve learned about Don Schumacher is you never doubt him. He’s always two steps ahead of what everybody is thinking. His passion could be elsewhere, but his passion is the racing, and he loves nothing more than to win racing."

Capps, runner-up a week earlier in Seattle, earned lane choice for his 65th final by beating DSR teammate Hagan in the semifinals, 4.16 to 4.19. Prior to that, he had powered his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge to runs of 4.18 and 4.23 to get past Wilkerson, avenging his final-round loss in Seattle and ending Wilkerson’s two-race winning streak at eight rounds, and Melanie Troxel.

Beckman had wheeled the Valvoline/MTS Charger past Jeff Diehl and world champ Robert Hight with a pair of 4.25s, then eked out an ultraclose win over Bob Tasca III’s Mustang, scoring on a holeshot by just .0004-second, 4.221 to 4.220. The final round was Beckman’s third of the season and the 20th of his Funny Car career.

Phillips, a winner this year in Madison and Englishtown, added another title with a seesaw victory over Andrew Hines in a Pro Stock Motorcycle final that both led twice before Phillips took the win light, 6.886, 196.76 to 6.909, 194.16. Phillips closed up the points gap on third-place Hines to just three markers and trails second-place Matt Smith by just five points. Arana leads Smith by 141 points.

"I’ve been working with some NASCAR guys on just playing with the carburetor, and that’s actually where my bike picked up," said Phillips. "We started working with the guys last year [starting with] Memphis. There were a couple of other things we did with the bike that they looked over and found that should have been done to the bike, and ever since then, the bike’s just been running crazy mph.

"Andrew had been whooping me pretty good. I don’t know what the winning record was, but that was the first time I had ever beat him on that bike. I bought the bike from him in ’03, and I just never could get him. I raced him maybe 10, 15 times, and he just kept beating me. I’d holeshot him, and he’d find some way to get around me. Pomona last year, I holeshotted him, and the carburetor jumped off my bike. I just finally got the monkey off my back."

Phillips and his Racers Edge Suzuki displayed top-end prowess early in producing a trio of mid-190-mph victories over Karen Stoffer, Smith, and Eddie Krawiec. After an opening 7.00 at 194 mph, Phillips improved to 6.89, 195 before bashing Krawiec’s Harley in the semifinals with a 6.871, 197.65, which set a new track record and new NHRA national speed record.

Hines, the defending event champ who also won at this stop in 2005 aboard his Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley, set down a trio of Buell riders -- Shawn Gann, David Hope, and Arana -- with a pair of 6.89s that bookended a 6.93 to reach his 34th final.

In the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series classes, Jimmy DeFrank Jr. nearly grabbed a rare double victory, winning in Stock but falling in the Super Stock final to Tony Mandella. Mike DePalma Jr. scored in Comp, Kyle Seipel in Super Comp, Top Fuel pilot Shawn Langdon in Super Gas, and Mike Ferderer in Top Sportsman.

Mark Burch Motorsports - Steady as he Goes

    7/23/2010 9:22:30 AM

Thomasville, NC: Coming off of a weekend of consistent podium finished; it was back at it again for the Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team.

Last weekend would take the #1M to Iowa for the Saturday night 360 event at the famed Knoxville Raceway, in Knoxville , Iowa . Chad was placed in the second group for qualifying and started the night out with the third quickest time. Although the #1M came in with the third quickest time overall, it seems that team discovered that they may be suffering some engine problems.

Chad started his heat third row outside in the sixth position and managed to grab the fourth place position with a great start. “The outside row had a great start and I was able to grab onto fourth and hang on to it, which was is the most important part.” Chad had to say of his heat. The #1M finished the heat in the fourth and final transfer position to the main.

The Engler Machine and Tool #1M started the A-Main, third row inside in the fifth position. “The track was narrow and tough to pass on, but it was the same track for everyone.” Chad said. Although there wasn’t a ton of passing for the night, Chad managed to finish the evening with a fourth place. “It wasn’t another podium finish or the win we had hoped for but it is another steady finish and that’s our goal.” Said Chad of his night.

You can cheer on the Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team as they get back at it again this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, in Knoxville Iowa .

Kalitta, Johnson get first season wins; Hight, Hines also score

    7/26/2010 10:00:08 AM

Thomasville, NC: Doug Kalitta in Top Fuel and Allen Johnson in Pro Stock broke through for their first wins of the season and were joined in the winner’s circle by Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway outside of Denver.

During the course of the event – the final leg of the three-race Western Swing and the second to last in the Countdown to the Championship’s 17-event regular season – nine drivers locked up berths in the playoff fields that will pit the top 10 drivers in all four classes in a six-race fight to the finish that begins Labor Day weekend at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

One thing was certain in the Top Fuel final: One driver would finally find salvation, the other continued frustration as Kalitta, winless in four finals this year and without a victory since the 2009 Winternationals, paired off with Bernstein, 0-2 in finals this year for new sponsor Copart and without a tour victory since last fall’s Virginia event. Kalitta joined his uncle Connie, a two-time winner here, and late cousin Scott, a three-time Denver champ, as king of the hill, taking the victory, the 32nd of his career, 3.96 to 4.00.

“When I saw the win light come on down there it was real special, a great relief,” said Kalitta. “They do a great job here and each year the facility gets better and better, and I’m just glad to finally get a win here. I’ve been close a lot of times and fortunately we got it done today.”

“This is really going to help motivate our team and give us the confidence that we can run with these guys going into the Countdown, and hopefully we can prove it. I’m just really proud of Jim Oberhofer, my crew chief, and all the guys today. It was great team effort.”

Kalitta, who had been runner-up four times at this event, rode a trio of 3.9-second passes to reach his fifth final of the season and 63rd of his career en route to defeating Terry McMillen, Steve Torrence, and 2007 Denver winner “Hot Rod” Fuller.

Bernstein pounded out passes of 3.96 and 3.97 in the first two rounds to best Cory McClenathan and defending event champ Antron Brown, then took down points leader and former “beer wars” rival Larry Dixon in the semifinals to take a narrow 18-17 edge in their lifetime meetings. Bernstein slowed to a 4.00, but it was enough to cover the tire-hazing 4.44 of Dixon’s Al-Anabi machine to reach his 35th career Top Fuel final.

Hight, the defending world champ, closed the gap ever-so-slightly on his boss, John Force, by defeating the points leader, 4.21 to 4.38, for his fourth victory of year and the 17th of his career. Hight now trails Force by just 28 points.

“I’ve been in a couple of finals before with John and never been able to get the job done, but today was our turn,” said Hight. “You know when you go up there against John that you better give it your all because he’s going to be ready. Our cars are set up real similar, so we know what they can run and we had to go up there and give it our all.”

“It’s nice to get back on the winning side here in Denver. My crew chief, Jimmy Prock, has never had a problem making horsepower, but with racetrack being so good last year with the cooling system and everything, we just didn’t have enough horsepower, and that bothered Jimmy. He came in here with a game plan – new parts and different things – and he definitely found the horsepower that he needed.”

Hight, who won this event in his 2005 rookie season, raced back to the final, the 31st of his career and fifth this year after defeating James Day in round, defending event champ Ron Capps on a holeshot in round two, and low qualifier Matt Hagan in the semifinals.

Force, a five-time winner in Denver, assured that he’d leave the mountain with the points lead by reaching the final to face his hard-charging employee, who is chasing him in the points. Force, the all-time NHRA record holder for wins and final rounds, reached the 209th final of his career and seventh this season in pursuit of win No. 131 by defeating Paul Lee, Bob Tasca III, and fellow former world champ Cruz Pedregon, ending Pedregon’s best season outing.

Three of Johnson’s eight career national event wins have come at his sponsor’s event, and his victory this year was his first of the season and first since he won this race last year. Johnson, who also won in Denver in 2007 and was runner-up in 2008, was never challenged in the final, cutting a .004 light and racing to a 6.97 to easily beat Jeg Coughlin Jr., who had to abort his final-round pass.

“We wouldn’t mind having all 23 races here,” said Johnson. “We really have an awesome setup for here. The engine guys, the car guys, and everyone else did their job can’t say enough about them. We just made a perfect run every run. To go up against Greg in the second round, and of course against Jeg in the final, I knew that I had to be on my game.  Fortunately I was able to do that. I had a .073 light in the first round and knew that I had to pick it up after that. I was tickled with the .004 that I had against Jeg in the final. We’re just going to have to keep getting after it, be aggressive in trying to win the championship and hopefully pull it off.

“It was great having all the Mopar folks here. They’re not just sponsors to us. They’re like family. This was the perfect place to get my first win of the year.”

En route to the 20th final of his career, Johnson’s Mopar Avenger raced past Bob Yonke, Greg Anderson, and Johnny Gray with a trio of six-second passes -- 6.973, 6.998, and 6.997, all of which were low for the round – to earn the right to face Coughlin.

Coughlin, who won last weekend in Sonoma, reached his second straight final, his fifth this season, and the 82nd of his career with a pair of six-second passes sandwiching a solid 7-flat in trailering Erica Enders, Vinnie Deceglie, and rookie Shane Gray, who red-lighted in the semifinals.

The final round in Pro Stock Motorcycle pitted two riders whose last win came in Atlanta; for Hines that was earlier this year, for Karen Stoffer three long years ago in 2007. Hines kept her winless streak alive with a convincing 7.34 to 7.40 victory, the 21st of his career and his second in Denver. With the win, Hines pulled to within 60 points of leader Hector Arana.

“Today I was playing with fire all day long with .00 lights [.006, .004, and .007] in the first three rounds,” said Hines, who was runner-up here last year. “We backed it off for the final to make sure that we wouldn’t red-light. We wanted to have a .030 and got a .029. We know that Karen [Stoffer] is a very tough competitor, and we didn’t want to make any mistakes.

“I grew up three hours south of here in Trinidad, Colorado, so it’s good to win here on The Mountain. This place is my home. We didn’t have the best motorcycle this weekend, just like we didn’t have the best motorcycle [when we won] at Sonoma, but we were able to get the job done. That says a lot about our team. I’ve also been stressing out all weekend because we’ve got a baby coming. I was waiting for a phone call all weekend, but we never got one.”

Hines, a winner earlier this season also in Houston, reached his 35th career final round by defeating a trio of Suzukis, setting down rookie of the year hopeful LE Tonglet, Jim Underdahl, and low qualifier Michael Phillips to reach the final. In a rematch of their final round in Sonoma last weekend, Phillips red-lighted to Hines’ Harley. Prior to that race, Hines had beaten Phillips nine straight times.

Stoffer, who had yet to reach even the semifinals this season, went that much better by reaching the final round aboard her GEICO Suzuki. On the heels of a great qualifying effort, Stoffer defeated red-lighting Angie Smith and fellow Suzuki riders Craig Treble and Steve Johnson to reach the 12th final round of her career and her first since last fall’s Charlotte event.

In Lucas Oil Series action, David Bogner in Super Stock, Brad Burton in Stock, and John Dexter in Super Street each collected their second Mile-High Nationals trophy and were joined in victory by Terry Edwards in Super Comp and Mike Wiblishouser in Super Gas.

Troxel, top NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod drivers to compete in NHRA Unleashed in Indy

    8/2/2010 4:11:24 PM

Thomasville, NC: The Pro Mod field during the inaugural NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil event at O’Reilly Raceway Park will be full of many of the stars of the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod series including fan favorite Melanie Troxel.  Also scheduled to appear are Roger Burgess, Raymond Commisso, Mike Knowles, Brad Personett, Derrick Townes, Danny Rowe, Michael Janis, Ike Maier and series points leader Von Smith.  The NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil event will be at O’Reilly Raceway Park on Aug. 6 -7.

During the course of the NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil event, fans will be treated to some of the wildest and fastest Pro Mods that are the true definition of doorslammer racing.   The field will consist of ’63 Corvettes, ’68 Camaros, ’67 Mustangs, ’68 Firebirds as well as late model cars.  Each time down the quarter mile these cars are on the fine line of out of control and the fans in the stands will be on the edge of their seats each round of competition.

Troxel is anxious to race during the course of the weekend and put on a great show for the fans.

“The great thing about the Pro Mod class is you never know what you are going to get each time these cars take to the track.  They have a lot of horsepower for such a short wheel base and these cars can get crossed up and sideways on each pass.  I think they are the most exciting class to watch,” she said.  “The professional nitro cars have incredible horsepower but I think the Pro Mods are true fan favorites.  Fans are very lucky that they will be able to see these cars in a non NHRA national event weekend and it will be very exciting.”

Also the opportunity to race on the O’Reilly Raceway Park surface, home of the Mac Tools U. S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, is always special for Troxel no matter what the event.

“Obviously the Mac Tools U. S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil is the premier event and it is the one you hear about,” said Troxel.  “Living in Indy allows us to come out and race here more than once a year and that is great.

NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil is a celebration of Pure American Horse Power and will feature some of the fastest street cars on the planet racing for a shot at immortality and a coveted NHRA Wally trophy.

Classes featured during the day of racing range from an 8.5 second class to 13.0 class, Outlaw 10.5, Limited Street, EZ Street and Modified Street.

The schedule for the two days will feature one round of qualifying on Friday night with two more qualifying sessions taking place on Saturday during the course of the day.  Following the three rounds of qualifying it will be time for the drivers to prove what they have under the lights that will shine brightly during the course of the nights racing activity.

The NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil tickets are $10 for Friday, on Saturday they will be $20, with a two day pass being offered for $30.  Families with children 12 and under will be able to bring them to the NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil event for free with paid adult.

Tickets are currently on sale for the NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil event at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis as well as racer registration.

NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil will be featured nationwide on Fox Sports Net in a series airing on consecutive weeks in November and December 2010. Two half-hour shows will be produced from each of the four NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil events, including the one at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis and the events taking place at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio (Sept. 10-11), Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Fla. (Nov. 5-6), and the recently completed event at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.  The shows will be hosted by Steve Watson and Sarah Karges and produced by Disrupt/ive Studios, producers of Pinks, Pinks All Outtakes and Pinks All Out.

The NHRA Unleashed presented by Lucas Oil events also will provide casting auditions for Who Wants to be a Race Car Driver? a new reality television show that will identify America’s next great race car driver. Interested participants attending the event will be ushered through interviews and on-camera auditions for the new show that is currently in the developmental stages. Those selected for the show will prove that they have the drive, ambition and desire to become the next great race car driver. Signage will be clearly posted throughout the event to direct candidates to the staging areas.

Get lost? A corn maze for a cause

    8/10/2010 1:49:50 PM

Thomasville, NC: You never forget a smile like Adam Petty's.  It was omnipresent. Big. Bright. Infectious. The portrait of promise, his grin was comprised of equal parts pride, mischief and heritage, not unlike his father's and grandfather's and great-grandfather's before him.

Just a teenager, he was the next in line to shade excellence in the familiar family blue. He would be the flint to rekindle the Petty competitive flame. The future was limitless.

He had a unique way with people. He was kind, thoughtful. And when it came to NASCAR, he got it. He got the racing part, and he got the vital corporate part.

In 1999, Adam was one of the young stars in the Busch Series to whom NASCAR could hitch its wagon for the next two decades. There was a slew of young stars in the series, as Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, the Grubb brothers and Hank Parker Jr. all enjoyed budding fan bases.

Another rising star was Casey Atwood.Back then Atwood was a 17-year-old can't-miss shoe who, at that point, backed up the hype. He was fast behind the wheel but slow to discuss it. Generally, he wasn't overly keen on media obligations. That made his publicist's life difficult.

That publicist, Paul Setliff, is an old buddy of mine. He's easygoing and doesn't get too excited about trivial matters -- especially those stemming from cranky race car drivers. And when Atwood gave Paul grief about an appearance, Adam would often come to Paul's aid, and explain to Atwood why it was necessary.

From there, Paul and Adam became fast friends.

When Adam Petty died, in a crash during a Busch Series practice session at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on May 12, 2000, so did his infinite promise.

Paul's son, Cole, was just a few months old at that time. Paul remembers arriving home from Loudon, N.H., that Sunday, walking straight inside his house to Cole's crib, and sitting and staring at his son, while pondering the unimaginable hurt Kyle and Pattie Petty must have felt.

Paul said he looked down at Cole and thought, "If there's ever any way I can help give back in Adam's honor, I'm going to do it."

He found a way 10 years later.

When Setliff chose to exit the NASCAR circus in 2005, he struggled to find his niche. He was caught up in a couple of corporate layoffs and didn't know where to turn. For a couple of years he'd brought Parker to Oakhaven Farm in Ruffin, N.C., near the Virginia-North Carolina border, to hunt.

In doing so, he built a close relationship with Oakhaven manager Gary Barrett, and when the farm's owners began diversifying their business plan, they hired Setliff to manage marketing and public relations.

Last fall, the Oakhaven staff was kicking around ideas to drive traffic to the property and generate revenue. Setliff had just taken his kids to a corn maze in Cary, N.C., which was shaped in the likeness of former North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who had recently died after a long bout with cancer. The maze became a national story.

    That gave Setliff an idea.

"I thought that was such a cool way to honor [Yow], and it made me start thinking about some of the guys we'd lost [in NASCAR]," Setliff said. "To me, this was a great way to honor Adam, and give back to something he cared so much about, with Victory Junction. He deserves it. He was such a great guy."

Setliff and the Oakhaven staff immediately started planning the maze and the surrounding events known as "Oakhaven's Corntacular Adventure" (you can check it out at www.comegetlost.com).

The first step was to get the Petty family's blessing.

"When I saw the drawing, initially, I'm like, 'There's no way you're going to get this done.' It was like crop circles, personified," Kyle Petty said, laughing. "And these guys did it. And when you fly over it, it's phenomenal. What they've done is amazing. You look at stuff like that, and you think about it, and in a strange way it becomes a work of art because it takes so much time and effort."

Once the family signed off on the plan, Utah-based Maize Company was hired to design and cut the maze. It is massive, eight acres of corn planted in rows 30 inches apart, horizontally and vertically. Some 400,000 kernels were planted inside. Then developers played connect-the-dots to form the maze. After gridding it, a chemical was sprayed to kill off the unwanted vegetation. The entire process took just four hours.

The Oakhaven Maze will be open to the public from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, and all proceeds from pumpkins sold during that time will go directly to Victory Junction, a camp for chronically and terminally ill children. Now in its 10th year, the Victory Junction Gang Camp's motto in 2010 is "Keeping the Dream Alive."

The Oakhaven project will help. The goal is to attract some 16,000 visitors. Setliff's research says first-year mazes in areas with similar demographics typically draw 14,000 to 25,000 visitors. If Oakhaven draws 16,000, and sells half that many pumpkins, it will make a fine donation to Victory Junction.

"What feels good is it's been 10 years and there's still people doing stuff," Kyle Petty said. "It's not like, right after it happened, everybody jumped on board for six months and then everybody forgot about what we were trying to do, and what [Adam] was trying to do, with the camp.

"We can talk about the corn maze. We can talk about Kurt Busch.  We can talk about [Dale Earnhardt] Junior's donation last year. We can talk about Jimmie's donation of the bowling alley. People just continue to do stuff. That's the part, for me, that's the most gratifying. Even 10, 12 years later, whatever the date may be, people are still interested in doing things in Adam's memory. That's what's cool to me."

Fittingly, the maze is a rendering of a wonderful photograph of Adam.

He is staring straight ahead in his firesuit, smiling.

Ross "BooBoo" Dalton Produces First Win using Kera Axles - Sold Exclusively through CV Products

    8/17/2010 10:31:45 AM

Thomasville, NC: In the 30-Lap Limited Late Model race, Liberty's Ross "BooBoo" Dalton, who's only 15 years old, delivered his first victory of the season. Dalton's No.50 Chevy quickly climbed from forth position of 10 cars on the starting grid to grab the lead before 5 laps were down, leading the remainder of the laps to clinch the victory. Junior Kendrick's No.9 appeared to nudge the rear bumper of Dalton several times at the restarts of 3 cautions during the race distance, but Dalton zipped ahead to stay. "Its a whole different set up deal with these new tires" Dalton said. "We didn't know if the tires were going to be a good thing or a bad thing, but the car was just on a rail around here".
Dalton qualified on the pole, but started fourth after the mandatory redraw at Caraway Speedway.
Dalton has just started using the New Kera Axels sold exclusively through CV Products, Dalton said "When we found a sheared axle on the racecar, we spoke with Brian Morgan @ CV Products about the purchase of new axles. He was very helpful in providing the information we needed to purchase the best replacement product for our type of car and our class of competition. I felt a dramatic difference in the cars performance with the New Kera Axles. I noticed it being smoother in the corners with better acceleration off the turns. I had a much better car overall. I'm looking forward to using Kera Axles in the future as i believe this is a very impressive product. Thanks CV Products and Kera Axles for keeping my team up front".

Bode scores first to highlight dramatic regular-season finale in Brainerd

    8/17/2010 11:11:04 AM

Thomasville, NC: Bob Bode scored his first win in Funny Car, Larry Dixon remained perfect in Top Fuel, Andrew Hines stole the spotlight in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the 29th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

As the final event of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series regular season, the event was packed with Countdown drama all the way to the final rounds. A number of drivers clinched positions in qualifying, and although the last spots were claimed in Sunday's first round -- in which Dave Grubnic outlasted Terry McMillen in Top Fuel, Tony Pedregon held off Jeff Arend in Funny Car, Rodger Brogdon denied Kurt Johnson in Pro Stock, and Karen Stoffer and Craig Treble beat out Shawn Gann in Pro Stock Motorcycle – the battle for top seeds and positions raged all the way to the bike final, where Hines took the top spot from Hector Arana with his victory. Earlier, John Force held on by one point for the top seed in Funny Car.

Bode, a former national-championship boat racer, enjoyed his finest day on dry land when he powered his Arbee.com/Alard Machine Products Impala to the Funny Car winner's circle, upsetting heavily favored Jack Beckman in the final when Beckman's machine lost traction just off the starting line.

“All of this is kind of like a dream I’m afraid I’m gonna wake up from,” said Bode. “I didn’t know if it would ever happen, but now that it did, I can’t believe it happened. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me in my entire life in the racing world. I have a wife and kid, wonderful things there, but the racing world, this is it.

“[Against Beckman] I went up to the line going, 'Well, we’re in the final. If [Beckman] runs another .00, we’re going to be in trouble.' We were trying to run a .14 or maybe something a little bit better. There were no teeth left on the belt, I get up to the finish line, and there were little flames going out, and I’m going, 'I ain’t liftin’,' and I never saw him. But we would have tried for a .12, and we knew that maybe if I had a decent light, I coulda outrun him if he floundered and ran a .10. But we were just going to lay down our number and hopefully he made a mistake, and someone did."

Bode reached the final, the first of his career, on a trio of victories over past national event winners with a series of mid-4-teen passes: former world champ Cruz Pedregon, Englishtown winner Bob Tasca III, and three-time season winner Tim Wilkerson.

Beckman, runner-up here in 2008, didn’t win the event, but he did climb past teammate Matt Hagan and into third place in the standings. Although he only qualified sixth at 4.141, Beckman's special-edition Freightliner Dodge came on like a semi truck Sunday, rattling off passes of 4.057 (low e.t.), 4.080, and 4.089 to reach the final, the 21st of his career and his fourth this season. In his wake, he left Del Worsham, Robert Hight, and 1985 Brainerd winner Jim Head.

Dixon remained perfect in 2010 Top Fuel final rounds, winning his ninth straight in a titanic battle between the top drivers in the standings. Dixon scored in dramatic fashion, running 3.78 to beat McClenathan's 3.81 in one of the quickest side-by-side races in NHRA history. Dixon, who won this race in 1999 and 2001 but since has suffered four final-round defeats (2002, 2005, 2007, and last year) collected victory No. 56.

"I feel fortunate," said Dixon, whose engine suffered damage right as he hit the finish line. "When I lifted, it popped, but I saw the win light and the .78 on the board, and so I knew they weren't taking Cory and the Schumacher team lightly. I got heat-treated a little bit.

"We've won finals so many different ways this year, and there are so many variables that if you have just one hiccup, someone else wins. I've had seasons where I haven't won one race, so to win nine is overwhelming. These races are so hard to win; to win nine period let alone to win nine straight in finals is something."

Dixon, who reached his 100th final in winning the Sonoma event, didn't take long to begin working on his second hundred as he raced the Al-Anabi machine to a steadily improving trio of passes, from a cylinder-dropping 3.91 against Steve Torrence in round one to a 3.82 to defeat Shawn Langdon to a dazzling 3.79 in the semifinals to beat low qualifier Doug Kalitta's 3.83.

Like Beckman, McClenathan improved his Countdown position, eking past Tony Schumacher for the No. 2 seed. McClenathan, a three-time winner this season, reached his sixth final of the year and the 63rd of his Top Fuel career with the Fram dragster by racing past Chris Karamesines, Schumacher, and Grubnic with passes of 3.84, 3.83, and 3.80.

Hines clearly was on a mission in Brainerd, leading Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying from the first session as he worked diligently to chase down reigning season and event champ Arana, who led by 60 points entering the event. He chopped off a small chunk with his outstanding qualifying effort, then finished the job with his win – his second straight and fourth of the year -- against first-time finalist Jim Underdahl, 6.94 to 7.01, for his 22nd win. It's Hines' second win here, having scored in 2007. Older brother Matt won the race three times.

"Big win," said Hines. "I've never been No. 1 going into the playoffs, so it's nice to be in this position. Three or four races ago, we were looking at the points, and Hector had something like a 160-point lead, and we just wrote it off that we wouldn’t make it there. Luck turned to our side, the motorcycle started performing better, and Hector faltered a little bit, and we capitalized on it.

"Hungry guys like Jim Underdahl, you can't take them for granted because you never know what's going to happen. He improved a bit in the final and we slowed down, so I wasn't about to go out there and miss the Tree. They've got Vance & Hines power in that bike, and we're proud of it. They're doing a lot with what they have."

Hines had the bike to beat all weekend, putting the Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson on the pole with a track-record 6.915 and running a flurry of low 6.90s to reach the final, the 36th of his career and his third straight. He opened with low e.t. of the meet, 6.904, to beat local Buddy Robinson, then took a crucial victory when Arana fouled in the second round. Hines advanced to the final with a 6.92 by defeating Angie Smith in the semifinals.

Underdahl may not have made the Countdown to 1 playoffs, but the Forest Lake, Minn., hero showed the partial home-state crowd what his Suzuki Extended Care machine was capable of, racing past Craig Treble, Joe DeSantis, and Mike Berry with a pair of six-second runs and a 7.03 in the semi's. The fact that DeSantis and Berry were among Underdahl's late-round conquests bore out the upset-laden nature of the eliminator; three of the four semifinalists had not won a Wally.

In Lucas Oil action, Frank Manzo and Rick Johnson, who scored respective wins in Top Alcohol Funny Car and Super Stock at the inaugural Brainerd event in 1982, reached the winner's circle again. Manzo, the defending world and event champ, beat Tom Carter this year for his 90th victory, and Johnson beat reigning world champ Jimmy DeFrank Jr.

Top Alcohol Dragster honors went to Chris Demke, who defeated Duane Shields, and Dan Fletcher collected win No. 68 in Stock by defeating Ben Line, brother of Pro Stock ace Jason Line. Comp gold went home with points leader Al Ackerman, who defeated Lou Ficco Jr. for his second win this season. Former world champ Gary Stinnett beat Topeka winner Dustin Long in a double-breakout final in Super Comp, and Lance Trujillo scored his first win in Super Gas, turning back Stan Moulzolf in the final round.

In other competition, Adam Fricke took Pro Stock Snowmobile honors over Louie Wirbel.

Hight celebrates first championship with special paint scheme for Indy

    8/30/2010 9:17:09 AM

Thomasville, NC: Reigning NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car champion and Xceldyne Valvetrain user Robert Hight will kick off his title defense by campaigning a commemorative Auto Club Ford Mustang celebrating his first Full Throttle championship at the 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Labor Day weekend. The black and blue Ford Mustang will be adorned with the traditional Auto Club logos but the Mustang will also feature Hight’s Full Throttle world championship trophy as well as the verbiage “Robert Hight 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car Champion” on the sides and hood.

“I remember seeing and working on John’s championship cars so to have my own Full Throttle championship funny car is pretty neat. I have to thank Auto Club and Tom McKernan as well as all our sponsors like Castrol, Ford, Mac Tools and BrandSource for making my championship possible. This is also more than just my car. This is a representation of all the hard work my crew chief Jimmy Prock and my crew guys put into making a great run in the Countdown last year,” said Hight, the No. 2 seed in the 2010 Countdown.

“Last year in Indy we barely made the Countdown and then we won three races to get the championship. This season I wanted to be a dominant car and we have won four races so far. I would never guarantee a championship or a race win. They are too hard to earn. I have been in the past four Mac Tools U.S. Nationals finals and I would love to get this Full Throttle World Championship Auto Club Mustang into the winner’s circle this year and start the Countdown with a lot of momentum,” said Hight.

This is the third specialty Mustang Funny Car for Hight. He raced a Rookie of the Year Mustang in 2006, the year after he won the Auto Club Road to the Future award, winning the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals that year and in 2008 he raced a Los Angeles Dodgers commemorative Mustang the last two races of the season.

Mark Burch Motorsports – Black Magic

    9/1/2010 8:53:33 AM

Thomasville, NC: When we left you last time, it was in preparation for the 20th Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals (August 5-7). Since then the Mark Burch Motorsports crew has made some changes and come back with the magic!

Chad Humston was the tenth car out to qualify, setting quick time with 15.875 seconds on Thursday (the first night of the 360 Nationals). Chad raced his way through the rest of the evening, placing second in his heat and brining home third place in the A-Main. He went to sleep leading the evening with 493 points.

When it came time for the twenty-five lap, final, A-Main feature event on Saturday evening, it was Chad Humston and the Engler Machine and Tool #1M sitting in the pole position. It turned out to be a night of some unfortunate racer’s luck for the Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team. As the field came out of turn four, preparing for lap thirteen, something appeared to loosen up on the #1M. Fatefully the team would have to call it a weekend. “There was a saying that says something like you only being as good as your last race, and unfortunately our last race was a DNF and we aren’t very proud of that. I don’t know what you do to keep a bolt from shearing off, but we have made some changes so that we have four bolts sharing the load, instead of two.” Owner Mark Burch had to say.

Last week the Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team made their way to Boone County Raceway in Albion , Nebraska , to shake down their “Black Magic” car before making their way to Mid-Nebraska Speedway on Saturday. Friday night’s hot laps at Boone County Raceway gave the team something to smile about as they showed up to an “awesomely prepared track”, according to Chad . The team found a set up that would give them a 12.949 second lap time in hot laps. After some practice they were ready for the rest of the evening. Chad started second row outside for his heat and finished it with the win. His heat race win put him in tenth for the A-main and after a great race; he brought home a solid win. “Nothing like a win to get the boys firing on all eight cylinders again!” Chad said of the night.

After a night like that you can bet the team was ready for Mid-Nebraska Speedway in Doniphan , Nebraska . “More fuel for the soul. It was another dominating performance and it put Chad and the “Black Magic” #1M, chocolate covered banana wagon, in victory lane for the seventh time this season. Our assessment of the track changing from choppy to slick to rubber down was correct. Our Mark Burch Motorsports Engler Fuel Injected engine was singing and our Wolfweld Chassis was on rails.” A happy Mark Burch said.

Although in the last month there have been some obvious ups and downs, the Mark Burch Motorsports, Chad Humston Racing team has picked up and they’re ready to keep the momentum going. They will be bringing “Black Magic” back at Knoxville Raceway this Saturday. Be sure to get out there and cheer them on!

Allison Brothers Named Grand Marshals as PASS brings racing back to North Wilkesboro

    9/1/2010 9:04:54 AM

Thomasville, NC (September 1) -  Few motorsports events have generated as much buzz as the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) plan to bring racing back to the Historic North Wilkesboro Speedway slated for this weekend.  The PASS South Super Late Models will race for 200 laps and will be the featured division in this weekend's Inaugural Labor Day Classic.  In addition to the PASS South Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Stadium Stocks, and the Allison Legacy cars will also be competing on a weekend celebrating the history of short track racing.  It is only fitting that racing legends Bobby and Donnie Allison have been named Grand Marshals of short track racing's newest tradition.

“I can't think of a better way to get this great event started than to have the Allison brothers as Grand Marshals of the Labor Day Classic,” said Mayberry.  “Both Bobby and Donnie are known around the country for their ability on short tracks and I think it is wonderful that they can share racing's return to North Wilkesboro with all of our racers and fans."

Bobby Allison has four wins at North Wilkesboro, 24 top five's, and 29 top ten's in 41 starts from 1966 through 1988.  Donnie Allison is well known for his versatility behind the wheel finishing fourth in the 1971 Indianapolis 500 and for his part in making the 1979 Daytona 500 one of the most memorable in racing history.  In 1988, Donnie, along with his sons Donald, Ronald, and Kenny founded the Allison Legacy Series and helped jump start the careers of drivers such as Joey Logano, David Ragan, and Brian Vickers.  One of the newest stars to come from the Allison Legacy Series is Donnie's grandson, Justin Allison.  Justin began racing in the Allison Legacy Series in 2006.  He is the current series point leader and has won six races so far in 2010.  In July, Justin began his climb up the racing ladder by stepping into Robert Hamke's powerful PASS South Super Late Model at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway finishing 17th in the Firecracker 125.  Allison followed that up at PASS South's Daniel Boone Classic at the Newport Speedway by running in the top ten much of the race eventually finishing 11th.  This weekend Allison faces his toughest challenge yet ...200 green flag laps at the .625 mile North Wilkesboro Speedway.

While the support divisions will have single-file restarts, fans can expect the same exciting brand of PASS racing on Saturday afternoon when they will once again be treated to the nation's best Super Late Model drivers bumping and gouging on double-file restarts and making live pit stops throughout the race.

"By having live pit stops, teams will have the opportunity to make their own strategy throughout the course of the race," said Mayberry.  "Some teams will pit early, some will pit late and try to charge hard for the win, all of these scenarios will play out and it should be great for fans to see how it will all turn out."

Fans can look forward to a perfect day for racing Saturday with mostly sunny skies and a forecasted high temperature of 79 degrees
